Michael Rustin argues that many difficult issues lie in wait for the new Labour government, and threaten to fragment its fragile base of support. What is needed is a renewed model of a democratic state, working on both national and international planes, which can address, negotiate and manage the destructive consequences of global market forces, according to values of democratic citizenship.
