Book Launch: Champions of Equality: Trade Unions and LGBT rights in Britain

Lawrence and Wishart, the Trades Union Congress and Amnesty UK are proud to sponsor an LGBT History Month book launch to mark the publication of Peter Purton’s account of LGBT organising and mobilising in British trade unions. Peter will report on a movement that tranformed UK unions into “Champions of Equality” over one generation, against the backdrop of fierce workplace struggles, stigmatisation of LGBT teens and teachers through Section 28, and the calamity of HIV and AIDS.

Peter is the former LGBT officer of the TUC and was at the forefront of many of the struggles described. He will be joined for a panel discussion by Maria Exhall of the CWU, current LGBT representative on the TUC General Council, Carola Towle, LGBT Officer of UNISON, and Mike Jackson, veteran of Lesbians and Gay Men Support the Miners LGSM. The panel, which will look to the past, present and future, will be moderated by Shane Enright, Amnesty UK’s trade union campaigner and veteran LGBT activist. There will be an opportunity for questions from the floor.

The panel will be followed by a “village fete” reception with activism and trade union stalls, wines and refreshments and retro 80’s and 90’s sounds and an opportunity to share solidarity and to show that love is a human right.

Peter Purton will be signing copies of Champions of Equality at the reception.

Attendance is free but booking via Eventbrite is ESSENTIAL.

The event is hosted by Amnesty UK’s Trade Union Network and Amnesty UK’s LGBTI Network.
