Volume 47 contains Engels’ letters from April 1883 to December 1886 – the period following Marx’s death in March 1883.  The material in this volume reflects the realities of the international socialist movement, the broad sweep of Engels’ contacts and his wide-ranging studies during the period. Engels, who with Eleanor Marx, was Marx’s ‘literary executor’, concentrated above all on preparing Marx’s unfinished second and third volumes of CapitaL  Engels kept himself informed about the progress of the workers’ and socialist movement in Europe and the United States and the letters show the extent to which he was involved in working on tactics with contacts in these places.
