Volume 3 covers the period between the spring of 1843 and August 1844 before their close collaboration began.  These writings represent the transition of Marx and Engels from idealism to materialism.  The first part of this volume consists of works by Marx, including his manuscript Contribution to the Critique of Hegel’s Philosophy of Law.  The Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 published here represent Marx’s first attempt to synthesise new philosophical, economic and historical-political ideas.  The second part contains works by Engels: Letters from London, Outlines of a Critique of Political Economy in which, for the first time, economic phenomena were examined from the viewpoint of communist theory, then in its formative state; along with his series of articles entitled The Condition of England and other writings submitted to various papers and periodicals which illustrate his contribution to the development of proletarian journalism.
