Class has been the central organising principle in the history of left politics, but in the last four decades new forms of capitalism have transformed the cultures and social relations of class. We need a conjunctural analysis of the new forms of capitalism in order to understand the way class and its cultures are changing. Which patterns of wealth distribution, cultural consumption, and social behaviours have changed and which remain the same? What are the new inter-connections between class, gender and race? In the wake of traditional forms of socialism and social democracy what kind of politics and political organisation do we now need to develop? The day will address these questions and others.
Speakers confirmed so far include Beatrix Campbell, Jon Cruddas, Zoe Gannon, Andrew Pearmain, Mark Perryman, Leslie Sklair, Gareth Stedman Jones and Jane Wills.
Registration costs £30 for subscribers and £50 for non-subscribers (this fee includes an excellent lunch provided by the Tavistock caterers).
The event is organised with the support of Middlesex Un iversity and in association with Compass, Red Pepper and Renewal
