For the theme of this issue, academics, journalists and
politicians present a view of the current political state of the continent,
and the past 30 years of struggle that have led to it. The collapse of
the old state of Zaire - the embodiment of decay and corruption in Africa
- and its rebirth as Congo was, apart from the end of apartheid, the most
symbolic and heartening event on the African continent for three decades.
Basil Davidson examines the hopes pinned on Laurent Kabila, Congo's
new leader. Rakiya Omaar and Augustin Ndahimana Buranga
describe the unimaginable torment of the survivors of the 1994 Rwanda
genocide and the struggle to prevent it happening again. Victoria Brittain
recalls the assault on Angola during the 1980s. Lucy Hannan and
Kathurima M'Inoti examine how botched multi-partyism in Kenya has
deformed into an anti-democratic framework. Kevin Watkins assesses
the problems caused by the imposition of neo-liberal economic policies
in Zimbabwe. Joseph Hanlon looks at 'donorism' and sees how Mozambique
has come to be dominated by international businesses and aid agencies.
Laurence Cockcroft introduces The Warioba Report the former
prime minister's examination of state corruption in Tanzania, and finds
that it reveals a picture recognisable across the continent. Finally,
James Motlatsi, leader of South Africa's miners' union, presents
a critique of the ANC's economic policies.
