Soundings a journal of politics and culture |
Stuart Hall, Doreen Massey and Michael Rustin (editors) with Mike Rustin (theme editor)
The theme of the special section of Soundings 15
is the contribution that psychoanalysis can make to contemporary social
debate in uncovering some of the unconscious dimensions of social, cultural
and political life. Alan Shuttleworth writes on the mutual breakdown of
the antagonistic certitudes of psychoanalytic humanism and empiriscist
scientism. Andrew Cooper analyses some of the anxieties and fantasies
that underpin New Labour's obsessional monitoring and auditing - a process
which could be described as 'one- dimensional' modernisation. Helen lucey
and Diane Reay look at the role of the unconsciousin the formation of
class subjectivities. Richard Graham deploys psychoanalytic insights in
his analysis of dennis Potter's Karaoke. And Jennifer Wakelin finds
foodfor thought in her study of still life painting.
As well as the themed section, special features include Nancy Fraser on
the social left and the cultural left; Stephen Wilkinson on Cuba and Elian
crisis; Mike Waite on social entrepeneurs; Kate Young on violence againstwomen
in Bangladesh; and reviews, essays and poems.
