Windrush Echoes

Stuart Hall, Doreen Massey and Michael Rustin (editors) with Gail Lewis and Lola Young (guest editors)

Soundings 10 considers how the arrival of the Empire Windrush in 1948 in Britain has come to symbolise the inaguration of all the transformations that have occured in Britain as a result of postwar patterns of migration and settlement from the former British colonies. This issue explores the transformations of the last fifty years, reflecting on their effects on people's lives and loves - both black and white - and on our collective attempts to grapple with the chanching meanings of such terms as identity, belonging, nation and home. Contributors discuss immigration policies and the state; black women and black masculinity; changing notions of Britishness; the spatial racialisation of British cities; and the literature of migration; there are also short stories by Mike phillips and Jackie Kay
