The
story of the ISTC from 1951, when Britain's steelworkers put in an extended
working week to boost Britain's exports, to the present day when a smaller
but proud union has relaunched itself as a professional organisation.
John Kelly, Senior Lecturer in Industrial Relations at the London School of
Economics, writes: 'The steelworkers' union has been in the forefront of many
of the key political and industrial struggles of the past 50 years, from the
nationalisation debates of the Fifties through to the great steel and mining
strikes of the Eighties. As a former steel union officer himself, Martin Upham
is well placed to record the organisation's history and he has done so with
a style and a clarity that should appeal to a wide audience. This is a highly
readable and significant study.'
Martin Upham is a writer and freelance lecturer. He is also a former
ISTC Research Officer. Previous publications include Trade Unions of the World
and The Cassell Dictionary of Modern Britain.
