This
edition of the standard English translation of The Communist Manifesto was
first published to mark the centenary of Marx's death, in 1983.
The text remains, besides Marx's Capital, probably their best-known work,
and is one of the most admired and often quoted political polemics from the
nineteenth century. We are fast approaching one hundred and fifty years since
its first publication in 1848, and the world which Marx and Engels described
in such vivid and acerbic terms has changed beyond recognition or prediction.
Despite this, The Communist Manifesto reads as freshly as ever: its prose
is as powerful, its thought as original, now as then.
