This
collection explores ideas of the Popular Front, a broad alliance between different
groups and political, cultural and social forces in the fight against a common
enemy. The Popular Front opened the way for a massive mobilisation to block
the advance of fascism, most famously in France and Spain, but also in Britain
where it was known as the People's Front. This distinguished collection examines
the politics of the Popular Front and the reactions it produced amongst others
on the left, the radical cultural upsurge it stimulated, and its effects on
anti-imperialist politics in India and Ireland. Women's involvement in anti-fascist
and anti-war politics is discussed in a pioneering piece by Sue Bruley.
Contributors include Eric Hobsbawm, Monty Johnstone, Margot
Heinemann, Desmond Greaves and Martin Myant.
