Arcade
Arcade brings together under one roof many different aspects of culture and representation. It is a collection of essays, discussions, architectural design and graphic projects that have come together in the way that disparate things and people do in an arcade, in a communal attempt to escape the rain.
Contributions include: Richard Rorty interview; reflections on female urinals, scatological elements in the work of Schwitters and edible architecture; analysis of hypothermia as a primary death fantasy, and of Fragonard's gravitational fantasy; essays and designs for museum architecture; and thoughts on the impossibility of writing, Walter Benjamin, and perspective.
Contributors: Kathy Battista, Robert Clough, Pierandrea Gebbia, Francis Gooding, Lorens Holm, Catherine James, Mark Morris, Toby Newton, Barbara Penner, Segal, Weizman & Herz Architects, John Tercier, Fabrizio Trifiro and Bernard Vere.
Arcades is the second in an occasional series entitled Room 5, which publishes research from the London Consortium. The first was Whiteness, published in 2000. The London Consortium is a multi-disciplinary postgraduate research programme comprising Birkbeck College, University of London, The Architectural Association School of Architecture, Institute of Contemporary Arts, and Tate Gallery.
